WAT HET GEBEUR?Suid-Afrikaanse fotograaf Pieter Hugo is onlangs bekroon met die titel Standard Bank Young Artist 2007. Dié 30-jarige word deur die beoordelaars van dié kompetisie beskou as 'n "encouragement to many young talented photographers in contributing and taking part in a South African Photographic Renaissance".
Hugo se werk omvat die ruimte tussen gedokumenteerde foto-joernalistieke werk en meer ekspressionistiese foto-kuns.
WAT IS DIE IMPLIKASIES?
Hugo is tog te bly oor dié benoeming want meen hy: "It is refreshing that there is now the space where we can appreciate photographic images beyond the urgency of photojournalism".
Van sy bekendste werk is die Hyena People of Nigeria-reeks (sien foto) wat onder andere opgeneem is in Media24 Tydskrifte se bekroonde jaarblad Front Cover 2006. As wit fotograaf in Afrika probeer Hugo nie om 'n vlieg-op-die-muur te wees nie.
"It occured to me that I appeared to be out of place, and I often found myself critically scrutinized by the subject being photographed. I decided to switch ... that required negatiating consent and dialogue wiht the person being photographed", het hy in 'n Standard Bank-persverklaring gese.
WAT BETEKEN DIT VIR DIE RES VAN DIE MENSDOM?
Dit wil egter voorkom asof Suid-Afrikaners min gepla is oor Hugo. Dit kom na 'n veiling van honderde stukke kuns wat aan Brett Kebble behoort het. Dié mynmagnaat wat vroeer vanjaar vermoor is se kuns het hierdie maand onder die byl gekom in Kirstenbosch saam met talle luukse motors en eiendom wat aan Kebble behoort het. Alhoewel Kebble se eiendom en motors vir reuse bedrae geld geveil is, het prints van Hugo se werk vir 'n derde van die markprys gegaan. Sy 3 digitale Iris prints het is vir 'n skamele R9 000 van die hand gewys.
